A five-year-old was honored with a plaque by the San Bernardino County Fire Department for saving his grandmother from a fire.
Anxious parents wait for news outside a primary school in central Kenya, after an overnight fire in a dormitory kills at least 17 children and injured several others. Police say the blaze in Nyeri county's Hillside Endarasha Academy broke out at around midnight, while the children were sleeping. There are fears there could be more victims in the damaged building. Some 800 pupils, between the ages of roughly five and 12 attend the institution. IMAGES
A huge, fast-moving and rapidly growing wildfire in northern California is damaging homes and has forced more than 4,000 people to evacuate as firefighters battle gusty winds and perilously dry conditions, authorities have said. Fueled by a crushing heatwave, the so-called Park Fire -- the most intense wildfire to hit the state this summer -- has rapidly devoured nearly 240,000 acres (97,000 hectares) as of Friday night and is continuing to gain strength. Images show the scene after an overnight explosion at a warehouse near the airport in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. Authorities say the blast killed one person, a teenager, and injured more than 160 others. According to Uzbekistan's emergency ministry, the explosion was caused by powerful lightning. IMAGES
Fire and emergency crews are on site as the investigation continues into the cause of the fire that according to officials has now killed at least 73 people and left dozens others injured. It is not clear what caused the fire in the five-story building, which broke out overnight. IMAGES
