Elephant tusks, jewellery, statuettes and a mahjong game: a total of 1.850 tons of ivory were crushed and incinerated in Reims, France on Tuesday. The majority of the ivory was donated by some 90 private individuals, with the rest coming from police seizures. Equivalent to the tusks of some 180 elephants, the initiative was organised by the International Fund for Animal Welfare(IFAW) and France's Office for bio-diversity (OFB)in a bid to show that "ivory only belongs on elephants". A few hundred strikers gather in front of the Lavéra refinery in Martigues, southern France, to protest against Emmanuel Macron's pension reform plan. Cracked tarmac and twisted steel barriers and beams bear testament to an attempt by the driver of a "plus-50 ton" lorry to cross a bridge designed to carry less than half that load. The bridge, at Mirepoix-sur-Tarn north of Toulouse in southern France, collapsed into the river killing the lorry driver and a 15-year-old girl. IMAGES
