People gather in front of the Danish parliament in Copenhagen to call for the release of anti-whaling activist Paul Watson. Watson founded Sea Shepherd and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF) and is known for radical tactics, including confrontations with whaling ships at sea. He was arrested on July 21 on the basis of an Interpol "Red Notice" after Japan accused him of causing damage to one of its whaling ships in the Antarctic two years earlier and causing injury. IMAGES
The Zoo of Copenhagen has released footage of a baby elephant which was born last week in captivity as part of a European breeding program for Asian elephants. The mother is 16 year old Maha Kumari and the fathers name is Fahim. The name and gender of the baby elephant aren't known yet. Calves weight in beetween 70 and 90kg at birth after spending 22 months in their mothers wombs, the longest gestation in the animal kindom. Elephant births in zoos are relatively rare with a total number of 18 worldwide in 2023 IMAGES
The presidents of South America's Mercosur trade bloc countries pose for the official picture of the 63th Mercosur summit in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. The regional bloc -- originally formed by Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay -- will accept Bolivia as a full member and will sign a trade agreement with Singapore, the first with an Asian country.
