Ukraine is evacuating thousands after the dam's destruction unleashed a torrent of water, inundating two dozen villages and the city of Kherson. Some 200,000 people have now fled Sudan to escape fighting that erupted in mid-April, in addition to hundreds of thousands who have been displaced inside the country, says UN refugee agency spokesperson Olga Sarrado. SOUNDBITE
Heavy fighting in Sudan has led to 700,000 people being internally displaced since the middle of April, the United Nations says, adding the figure had doubled in a week. "There are now more than 700,000 internally displaced by the fighting which began on April 15," Paul Dillon, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration says. IMAGES
The fighting in Sudan has caused more than 100,000 people to cross the border, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado says. UNHCR, the United Nations' refugee agency, is estimating that more than 800,000 people could potentially flee to neighbouring countries as the conflict between Sudan's regular army and paramilitaries continues.
