A Long March 2-C rocket carrying a satellite jointly developed by China and France lifted off from a space base in Xichang, in southwestern China. The launch took place around 3:00pm (0700 GMT). The satellite, dubbed the Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM), will seek out gamma-ray bursts, powerful cosmic explosions that offer clues about the history of the universe. IMAGES

The WHO mission to China to uncover the origins of the coronavirus has failed to identify the animal source, but said there was no indication the sickness was in circulation in Wuhan before December 2019 when the first official cases were recorded. WHO foreign expert Ben Embarek, who was based in the WHO's Beijing office for two years from 2009, backs up the Chinese side's assertion saying there was no evidence of "large outbreaks in Wuhan" before then. A plane carrying around 200 French citizens evacuated from the Chinese city of Wuhan, epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, has landed near Marseille, AFP reporters onboard the aircraft say. Images filmed onboard show the passengers, who will be placed in quarantine at a seaside holiday camp for two weeks, applauding as the plane touched down at the Istres military base.
