Russia's expedited espionage trial of US reporter Evan Gershkovich reaches its final stages Friday in a case condemned as a sham by Washington. IMAGES
Russian director Yevgeniya Berkovich and writer Svetlana Petriychuk appear in a Russian military court, where they were sentenced to six years in prison for "justifying terrorism" in a 2021 play about women marrying jihadists in Syria. The pair were sentenced following a closed-door trial, after the women's arrest in May last year sent shockwaves through Russia's artistic community. IMAGES

Images show Evan Gershkovich leaving court after his detention was extended by two months. Gershkovich, an American Wall Street Journal reporter is being held in Moscow on espionage charges which he denies. The court hearing was attended by representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Russia. He was arrested during a reporting trip at the end of March last year in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg and could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. IMAGES
Darya Trepova, a 26-year-old accused of killing a military blogger and supporter of Moscow's Ukraine offensive, appears in court for her case's first hearing. Russian investigators say Ukraine orchestrated the attack on Vladlen Tatarsky, which took place at a cafe in Saint Petersburg in April. Trepova is alleged to have gifted Tatarsky a statuette, which exploded minutes later, killing the blogger and wounding more than 30 others. Ukraine has denied involvement and blamed domestic infighting for the killing. IMAGES
