UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says he cancelled a meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis because his Greek counterpart failed to keep a "commitment" not to publicly dispute ownership of the Parthenon Marbles. An angry Mitsotakis cut short his three-day visit and headed back to Greece, according the Greek leader's office, after the meeting scheduled for Tuesday was pulled. "When it was clear that the purpose of the meeting was not to discuss substantive issues for the future, but rather to grandstand and relitigate issues of the past, it wasn't appropriate," Sunak tells the House of Commons as he addresses a diplomatic row against a backdrop of ownership claims to ancient sculptures on display at the British Museum. Workmen digging at a farmhouse in southwest England last February discovered a hard layer 18 inches below the surface that turned out to be pieces of a mosaic. Property owner Luke Irwin said he sent a photo of the mosaic to the local council. He told the New York Times that within 24 hours, a team of archeologists were on his property.
Vienna, winter. Johann, a guard at the grand Kunsthistorisches Art Museum encounters Anne, a foreign visitor called to Austria because of the poor health of a friend. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer offers a state apology for the Grenfell Tower fire disaster that killed 72 people in 2017, as the release of a final report found the deaths were avoidable. "It should never have happened. The country failed to discharge its most fundamental duty. To protect you and your loved ones, the people that we are here to serve.
